Why I chose to go to Stanford?
I wanted to experience an environment different than the ones I had been in through graduating from high school (Europe and a boarding school on the US East Coast). I thought college was an excellent time to experience different environments to expand my horizons and challenge myself. I also wanted to be in a college setting that was a large university rather than a small college, to have as many varied interactions with different kinds of people as possible. Stanford is also a physically beautiful campus with amazing weather – this really attracted me as well.
What Stanford can offer students, that you won’t read about on its website ?
Stanford has a very relaxed atmosphere which can be very intense at the same time – but only as intense as you want it to be. For me this created an extremely productive learning environment since it allowed me to define my interests and pursue them based on intrinsic values rather than pressured by the external competitive environment My fellow students were a very diverse and extremely smart group – in many different ways. Budding entrepreneurs, creative types, Olympic athletes, ambitious future investment bankers: everyone was free to pursue their interests and live out their full potential. The interaction with senior faculty was much more frequent than I expected from a large research university. The physical beauty of the campus and the great climate provided an excellent backdrop to the amazing 4 years I spent there. The friendships I made there last up to this day.
